Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo: Part 1

Today I am off to the Tampa Zoo! According to their website, there are 38 species of exotic birds flying freely in the zoo's large aviary.  I'm hoping to not only capture some great shots in the bird enclosure, but also some local florida birds out and about visiting the animals with me.

My FAVORITE fun fact about the Tampa Zoo:

In 2006, one of the zoo's two Sumatran tigers, a 14-year-old female named Enshala, slipped through an unlocked gate and into an area undergoing renovation. The zoo director, Lex Salisbury, defended his decision to shoot and kill the animal after attempts to tranquilize the tiger failed and the animal lurched towards the animal doctor that had shot the tranquilizer dart.

Admittedly, that's dark.  But here I go to brave Tampa zoo.

Vinoy Park Shoreline

This evening, my friends Justin and Amy joined me in Vinoy Park to take a walk around the shoreline bike path.  We saw and photographed a lot of the usual suspects, but got quite a few good shots of a few new bird species.  Amy, who has come birding with me previously, and Justin absolutely get an attaboy for spotting most of the birds tonight!  Thanks guys!

At the end of the 2 .5 mile trail, we discovered an island COVERED in birds.  After photographing many birds of prey, this is quite possibly the scariest island I have ever seen.  It was crawling with herons, ospreys, and cormorants.

Here are the best shots of the evening:
